Fissure Sealants
A plastic material placed on adult teeth to form a physical barrier that helps protect the teeth
Fissure sealants are a plastic material placed in the fissures of adult teeth at the back of the mouth. They are used to form a physical barrier that helps protect the tooth from decay and stop any food particles from falling into the tiny grooves.
Our Karratha dentists are experienced in placing fissure sealants for both children and adults alike.
What are the benefits of fissure sealants?
Fissure sealants are a cost-effective way of protecting your child’s oral health. According to the Journal of the American Dental Association, fissure sealants can reduce the risk of cavities by up to 80%.[1]
Furthermore, they are prepared and placed in little time and cannot be easily seen in the mouth.
How are fissure sealants placed?
Fissure sealants are commonly pain-free and relatively easy to place. Your dentist or hygienist will first prepare and clean the tooth before drying it. The liquid resin is then applied to the fissure and then set with a special curing light to harden the material.
The treatment should take no more than a few minutes and the result is a hardened coating that protects the tooth from cavities.
